Big Sur

The View from Nepenthe

In 1947 Lolly and Bill Fassett bought a log cabin in Big Sur, California with the dream of building a restaurant where people from up and down the coast could come and eat and drink under the sun and stars and marvel at the spectacular views of the Big Sur coastline. The name of the restaurant is Nepenthe and today it’s still owned and operated by Lolly & Bill’s children and grandchildren. The views of Big Sur are indeed spectacular but unfortunately on the day that I was there it was shrouded in fog. I certainly wasn’t going to get the image I was dreaming off (looks like I’ll have to make another trip out to California 🙂 ) but decided to try to see what I could do with the fog and my 10 Stop ND filter.

Pfeiffer Beach

Pfeiffer Beach is located in the heart of Big Sur. It was tough to find and if you’re driving south almost impossible. We stopped to ask directions and were told to turn right at the yellow yield sign. Ok we did and sure enough after driving about a mile or so down a very narrow one lane road we came upon this beautiful gem. It’s unfortunate that I wasn’t able to get here at sunrise or sunset but sometimes itineraries dictate otherwise.

This was an 11 sec. exposure using my 10-stop ND filter at f/9. I processed the image in colour and black and white. Which one do you prefer.

Nepenthe Blue Jay

While in Big Sur we stopped at Nepenthe for lunch. The view is beautiful…or so I understand it to be. Because of the fog we had the day we were there we only got to see glimpses of it. Nepenthe Restaurant, which sits high above the Pacific Ocean in the Santa Lucia mountains, is a popular spot. It was quite busy when we got there so instead of a table we opted for the first thing that was available which was seats on the terrace overlooking the Pacific. When out food came so did the Blue Jays. Do you know what this one is doing? Looking intently at my french fries…waiting for me to turn away so that he could steal one. Actually they don’t wait. They’re quite bold and one swooped in on my neighbours french fries and helped himself.

Weekly Photo Challenge – Sea

It’s been a while since I participated in the WordPress weekly photo challenge. Not because I haven’t wanted too but its just been so busy. When I saw this weeks challenge I just couldn’t pass it up especially since I have so many images from California that I want to share and besides being at the beach or out at sea is one of my favourite places to be.

smell the sea, and feel the sky
let your soul & spirit fly, into the mystic…”
