Lerici

The Candy Stand

When I was in Lerici, Italy my husband and I took a leisurely walk around the waterfront. On that beautiful, sunny day vendors  were lining the small harbour selling handmade crafts and souvenirs but it was the last vendor that really caught my attention.

This scene was as colourful as you see it. I took 3 bracketed exposures to ensure that I caught the full dynamic range of the scene and processed the image in Photomatix.

Sea Castle by Night

Sitting high above the town of Lerici is an old medieval castle which is now home to the Geo-paleontological museum. The castle shines bright at night as seen from the court yard of The Doria Park Hotel.

A Harbour, A Castle & A Beautiful View

Earlier this week I posted an image of the Bay of Poets over the town of Lerici. Today I wanted to share with you the view from the other side of the harbour.

The Bay of Poets

Located 11km south of La Spezia in Liguria, the town of Lerici is little gem in the Italian Riviera. Lerici is situated on the Bay of Poets and the image below was taken from my hotel, The Doria Park.

When planning our itinerary, Portofino in the Italian Riviera was one of the places we wanted to spend a couple of nights, unfortunately we couldn’t find a hotel so we decided to locate ourselves in close proximity. I had actually never heard of Lerici but my husband said it would be a good spot and it looked charming. We were still undecided until a friend recommended we look into the Doria Park Hotel. I’m so glad she did because the hotel was located high on the hill overlooking the harbour and the main piazza.

The Bay of Poets also known as the Gulf of La Spezia is so known because it was a favourite of many poets including Byron and Shelley. Percy Shelley drowned there during a sudden storm when returning from Livorno to Lerici in his sail boat.
