Horsing Around in Old Montreal
Happy Monday! I hope you all had a great weekend. With all the snow and wintery conditions in Europe this past weekend I’m a little hesitant to tell you that it was very Spring like in Toronto yesterday. So much so that I headed down to the Lakeshore yesterday for some sunset shots. I’m working on processing them and will share a little later in the week.
In the mean time I was going back through my archives and I was surprised that I hadn’t posted this shot. I shot this last August while strolling through Old Montreal.
Old Montreal, which is located along the St. Lawrence River is the oldest area in the City of Montreal, dating back to New France in the mid-1600s. In 1964 it was declared a historic district by the Ministère des Affaires culturelles du Québec.
Today its cobblestoned streets are lined with galleries and restaurants and in the summer it comes alive with street performers. If you didn’t know any better you’d think you were walking through a small town in Europe.

Clever use of the selective color, Edith. The red in the fire hydrant and rope really offset what looks to be an old postcard really well. You have also caught the perfect moment with the horse’s head turned.

I just was up in Montreal last month to take photos and meet up with my friend and fellow photographer Ken Kaminesky (if you haven’t already Google him to be amazed). I havn’t posted any of my shots from the trip yet, but I did post a quick and informal interview with Ken about “When to shoot HDR” while we had dinner at Taverne Gaspar in Old Montreal. Very nice Edith. Your selective use of color does not distract from the composition but adds just enough contrasting tonality to make the shot interesting. Well done!

A strong picture, with so many details, so many shades of greys. The selective colouring is well done, but what I really like is that you didn’t only colour the fire hydrant but also the leash. That is an important detail. The picture looks like taken during another time period. Well done!
